Wonderful Irish Sunshine

Soooo, today I woke up and it was SUNNY and GORGEOUS and WARM out, so what was the best way to take advantage of the day? Go for a run of course! I ended up finding the NUIG regional track after I took a detour from the usual route. Super duper (it is a very nice track). On my way home it started to downpour, which was fine with me. Then we went grocery shopping, came home, and went exploring!

I was randomly looking out the window and realized that there was a little path behind our house. Who knew? So Melissa and I went to find it and had to scale a wall to do so. Once we had gotten to the other side, we noticed a little mini horse and this was the smallest horse that I have ever seen in my life. Anywho, it looked lonely so I went up and started to pet it; poor little guy, he was sweating uncontrollably, there was no water anywhere for him to drink, and his eyes were dripping with who-knows-what. Unfortunately, there was nothing we could do, sad day. After that we left to resume the afternoon and enjoy more of the day. When climbing over the wall again, what did we find? A lonely license plate! It was at the end of a dead end road and was from 11 years ago and had apparently been abandoned. I think you can tell how this story ends... :D Then it went back to a pretty typical day and we had EARTH HOUR!!!--this is when you shut off everything for an hour. It was dark out and there wasn't much to do, so we went for a walk. Delightful!

That's my day and now I will give y'all some suggestions in case you want to brush up on Irish history (I have these all hyper-linked, so you can click on them for the Wikipedia articles):

Angela's Ashes
by Frank McCourt: This is a book about an Irish family during the 1930s and 40s.

The Wind that Shakes the Barley: This is a movie about the Irish War of Independence from Britain--very sad, very well made, and the actors are actually Irish.

Michael Collins: This is a movie about Michael Collins who was a leader in the Irish revolution and a key player in the Anglo-Irish Treaty.

So, that's all I've got. Have a great day!

FRIDAY :D

Things that are making me happy:
*Scribd: thank you to the glorious soul that scanned an entire 700+ page textbook and put it online for peeps like me to use when we don't want to fork out the 100 euro for it and there is never an available copy at the library
*Sunny weather: today I walked home from class while carrying my hoodie :)
*Motion City Soundtrack music
*This project almost being done (done for me anyway, I only need a 40% in the class to pass)
*Browsing eBay for vintage clothes with Melissa
*Using study time to talk to friendly people instead
*My inhaler: Something is in bloom here and this sucker is saving my life at the moment
*"Homeward Bound" by MoTab: I've always liked that song and their version is amazing
*Talking to people that sadly fell out of my life at one time and are now becoming a part of it again :)

Thing that are not making me happy:
*Mozilla: I realize that you hate me, but STOP CRASHING. I am about to go back to Google Chrome
*The washing machine: Please stop ruining my clothes. You've already gotten the better of all my socks, is it really necessary to start in on the t shirts?
*That's all I've got for things that are not making me happy, but they really are problematic

Hey! Guess Who's Back?

Shady's back, back again....bhahahaaa just kidding. Anywho, so here's how the past week has gone:

I was walking to the bus after class on Friday and ended up in the most delightful little shop that is owned by an Indian (I think) lady and I'm pretty sure she makes most of the clothes in there. Anywho, they sell the most spectacular fitted hoodies that I have ever seen, and not only are they super comfy they are also super cheap. I was in little Kelty heaven. Moving on. I got on the bus and on the way to Dublin I started reading "Angela's Ashes", it is sad, but still very well written. I think I'll have it finished by the end of the weekend. So I got to Dublin, went to YSA conference where we proceeded to have a treasure hunt. Yep, I didn't last doing that very long. I ended up with a sweet uber expensive camera so I took pictures instead of the activity :D Oh, I think it would be a good time to interject that this conference invited everyone from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and England. I think about 100 people showed up so it was really fun! I met tons of people and had a super duper time in the process. I think I kinda needed that ;)

On to Saturday, we did a service project and went to an adventure park with a rock climbing wall, high ropes course, an orienteering activity and all that sorts of wonderful stuff. That was up in the Wicklow Mountains and it was GORGEOUS!

By the way, Ireland kinda looks a lot like southern Idaho in case you were wondering. So after that we went back to the church and there was an Irish dancer that was teaching us all sorts of Irish dances. After that a couple of us went to Eddie Rocket's where I proceeded to spill a chocolate malt EVERYWHERE. Fail. Then we went back to the dance (which by this time was a normal dance).

Sunday: We all invaded the family ward, had some workshops in the afternoon, had an excellent fireside on Adam and Eve, and ended up watching the first half of "The Fox and the Hound". However, then we had a technical difficulty and moved on to "Transformers 2". There was also a hitch in that plan--we couldn't find the remote, so we shut off the movie before it was too scandalous to show in the church.

Monday: We planned a semi spontaneous trip to Howth (I say 'semi' because this plan was hatched on Sunday and announced to all the YSA on Sunday night). There were about 25 of us that went; we all met up Monday morning and took the train there. It was GORGEOUS! It is a little town on the coast north of Dublin.

We hiked a trail up on the hills behind town, but then it started downpouring, so we turned around. When we got back into town we ate at a little fish and chips shop and it was AMAZING! I don't even really like fish. Yay for their mad skills. Then we went to go find a castle and had to run across a golf course in the process. A golf course on which people were golfing. We all busted out of the trees and ran for it :D

So we got to the castle and went to a church and then took the train back to Dublin. We ended up at Eddie Rocket's again where I proceeded to spill an entire container of straws. Hmm...maybe I shouldn't go in there anymore...But after that I went to a Boyce Avenue concert and it was SWEET! Because I got there when the doors opened I was at the front and they are amazing live. Then I went downtown and met up with a couple of the peeps and we wandered around for a little while.

Tuesday: Caught an early flight to Leeds, got to the airport there, rode the bus into town, walked to the bus station, went out to the bed and breakfast that I THOUGHT was booked (it took almost an hour to get there), turned out it wasn't booked, so I headed back into town. I got on another bus and an hour and a half later, I had no idea what to do. No place to stay, had to catch an early flight Wednesday morning and the concert that night wouldn't get over until pretty late and it was in the sketchy part of town. HMMM....what to do. Dilemma. As luck would have it, I saw a STATravel agency (they are for students studying abroad and I am actually a member. How handy!). They told me where a hotel was that was close to the concert AND the bus station AND how to get from one to the other and to the airport. How nice of them! So I went and checked in at the hotel (Leeds has NO hostels and this was actually one of the cheapest rooms I could find) and paid a tragically exorbitant amount to stay there. I explored for most of the afternoon and found the City Market; this is basically an entire city block with a roof. Neato burrito!

The concert was Motion City Soundtrack and it was EXCELLENT! I was right at the front and it was glorious :) So then I went back to the hotel and caught the 6 a.m. bus the next morning so that I could catch my plane on time.

Whoa buddy. That is my [extended] weekend in a nutshell. Now I am working on a project that is due tomorrow and it is almost finished. So, now I've gotta jet. Class is calling.

Procrastinaaaation

At the moment, I have this, YouTube, a page for the Harvard citation style, the Patagonia webpage, the Horizon Organic webpage, a 15 page learning journal (still in progress, hence the Patagonia and Horizon Organic pages), the outline for the said learning journal, iTunes, and 2 windows for Windows messenger open. This does not even take into account the semester's worth of notes, a text book, an Institute manual, my scriptures, and the random assortment of other papers that are currently taking up almost HALF of my bed. So, what I SHOULD be doing is finishing the learning journal as it is due next Friday and I am taking a 5 day sabbatical between now and then (not only that, but in finishing it I could put away 92% of the list mentioned). But, obviously, that is not happening.

Now that that's covered, MOVING ON. Yesterday was St. Patrick's Day. For those of you who don't know (I am guilty. I did not know this until yesterday), St. Patrick brought Christianity to Ireland and that is the start of this glorious green holiday. As a celebration, I went to Dublin with Sinead, we watched part of the parade (I'll post pictures), watched a hurling match, watched a Gaelic football match, saw a friend that I hadn't seen since high school, hopped on the train and came home. I must say, when we got back to Galway, I was astounded. We had walked through town that morning and it had been clean. On the way home however, I have never EVER seen that much garbage in my life ever. It was shocking. The poor city didn't stand a chance ;) So here are some pictures of our delightful Dublin outing.

Hmm...nice outfit. I'm sure your friend, Lady Gaga is around here somewhere....

This is what my nightmares are made of. He had a creepy female counterpart, but I didn't get a picture. Sad day. Ok, not really.

Croke Park before the matches. That is the band on the field. Woot!

Sign for the Gaelic football match. Yep. That is definitely in Irish.

Gaelic football, baby!

Moving on, for those of you who want to hear a proper Irish accent, go here. In there you will find a little ditty talking about the word 'situation' I didn't really get that until today. I was sitting in class and 15 minutes into it, I started to notice how often the professor said it, so I started counting. Over the next 30 minutes, I counted that word 25+ times (I did zone out of the lecture entirely for about 5 minutes in there). Holy buckets! So that's that. Anywho, tomorrow I am leaving until Wednesday morning, and I must go pack and all that jazz, so this is Kelty, over and out.

Weekend Update!!

This will be quick. I'm not in the mood to type. The plane ticket to Florence is booked. I found out the dates of all my exams. Melissa and I just booked a week in Morocco (Hello beaches, warm weather, and a HUGE outdoor market. Oh my goodness). We went to the market on Saturday and bought potted flowers and they are sitting on the windowsill blooming (pictures below). We had District Conference this weekend. I had a job interview on Friday (via Skype). That's about all I've got. Peace out.

Wide-Eyed and Sleep Deprived

It is 2:59 am and I am still awake. This is after going to bed at, oh, I don't know, 2:30 or 3:00 at the earliest for the past three nights, so I'm a little sleepy. Actually, I'm at the point where I'm not really tired, just kinda in a daze, but the best writing is done late at night, right?? And writing has been what I've been doing. Over the past three days I have COMPLETELY redone my resume, and today I pounded out two cover letters, turned in two internship applications, [and in the past 2 1/2 hours] have written the letter about why I want to TA a freshman honors seminar, have done the majority of my application for Mortar Board, and have started to fill out my graduation worksheet. Whoa. Look at me go. And by the way, I finally watched Titanic, and it is TRAGIC. So sad. Anywho, maybe I really should go get some sleep. Over and out.

It's Always Sunny in...Galway?

Ok, maybe not, but it has been for the past couple of days and I have been LOVING IT. Case in point. Today during Sunday school, I opened the shades and sat in a delightful little patch of sunshine. Then during Relief Society a window was open so we had a nice little breeze going through. Yeah, buddy. Then when I came home it was actually warm enough to OPEN MY BEDROOM WINDOW. This in itself was more than enough to make my already marvelous Sunday even better :) Ok, I just thought y'all should know about that because I have never been more excited for some nice spring weather :)

Now I'll move on. The past couple of days have been productive, which is good because I REALLY needed to get some of that homework done, which I did! I've been home alone for the majority of the past three days (both roommates went home for the weekend), so what did I do aside from the aforementioned homework? WEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLL, I figured out my schedule for the next two semesters and discovered that I can graduate next May. Suh-weet! However, that means I'm going to start grad school a year earlier than I thought, so I should probably start looking into that a little more seriously...and not only can I graduate earlier, I can do so with the highest achievement honors degree if I keep my grades up. Neato burrito! I've also been working on my resume; I'm turning in applications to two different internships this week--both in Bozeman and I think they both would run during the school year. Then yesterday, a bunch of us went shopping and it was all sorts of delightful fun :)

Random sidenote: I've decided that I need to start eating more fresh fruits and veggies, so I bought lettuce and tomatoes and fresh mozzarella cheese to make a salad. What was missing? The dressing, of course! I discovered the best balsamic vinaigrette that I've ever had in my life. Oh my gosh, it is amazing. Moving on. Sorry ;)

So Saturday night. I ended up on Windows messenger for awhile, built a fort, and had a delightful conversation in the process :) I found out that my ability to multitask (ie. talk to someone and do homework at the same time) starts out alright, but undoubtedly ends up with the homework not really happening. I am totally ok with this. Haha :) Anywho, today I went to church, came home and made a delicious salad and started reading The Sound and the Fury. I'm not very far into it, so I can't really say whether it's good or not. After that, I took a nap for FOUR hours, talked to the Big G (aka Grandma!) and now I'm trying to figure out what else I have to eat. Hmmm...big question. Ok, so the music recommendation at the moment (in honor of the delightful spring day we had here) is "All Over Now" by Eric Hutchinson. This song makes me want to go for a drive with the windows down and the radio up...and perhaps even have a picnic. Have a super-duper day!

The Big Two-One

Woot! Yesterday I turned 21. Neato!!! So there are a couple of things: 1. What can I now do that I couldn't before and 2. How did I celebrate this oh-so-glorious occasion??? Here we go:

1. I just Googled it and pretty much nothing of interest. I can buy a handgun, my car insurance will go down, and I can legally drink in the US. Hmm...I don't to burst my own little bubble of 'happy', but not the most exciting age as far as everything mentioned goes (but still a delightful age regardless).

2. This actually started on Wednesday night. We were going to go out, but instead decided to stay in, make food, and go out on Thursday. I ended up going home after that and texted my roommate on the way. When I walked in the door to the house, she surprised me with party poppers, a decorated house and an absolutely delightful cake (it was double layer and had peaches and pears in it. Oh my goodness, it was amazing). After that, the circumstances led to me learning a stellar techno dance. Oh yes. In my kitchen at 11:30 at night, the three of us found a sweet jumping techno dance and I learned it :) On Thursday I didn't have class until the afternoon, so I hung out at home and got a bunch of stuff done, went to class, went to a BaconSoc Meeting (where I was officially made the Dance Coordinator. Everyone was arbitrarily given an office. Nifty! Mine was due in large part to the 'Star Dance' that I taught everyone last week during rehearsals. Hahahaaa!). Then I went into town, met the peeps at their apartment, and then we went out. We ended up finding a live band that was pretty good and that finished off the night. It was kinda late when the band and such finished, so I just spent the night in town on their couch.

This morning when I woke up it was GORGEOUS out. Everyone else was still asleep, so I left them a note and went on my way :) The docks are less than 5 minutes from where I stayed, so I walked there and here it is:

Moving on. After that I had to get some groceries, so I went to the store, wandered around the shopping district for a few minutes, and made the trek back home. That sums up the birthday and brings me up to about right now, and now I have to go study some Celtic mythology and read more about Japan.

One more thing, my music recommendations at the moment are "Picture Perfect" by Every Avenue and "Two Princes" by Spin Doctors. That's all. Peace out.

Happy Birthday to: Florida, Time Magazine, and Indoor Ice Hockey!!

SO, here it is Wednesday afternoon and I haven't had class all day. Yay. Last weekend my roommate had some of her friends come in to watch the Six Nations rugby match (Ireland vs. England) and Ireland won. WOOT! That was a pretty fun little get together. On Sunday I was supposed to teach the Relief Society lesson, but ended up being ridiculously sick most of the day, so that didn't happen. Luckily enough, Melissa had me all sorts of drugged up, so I was fine by Monday :) Moving on, on Monday we went to a theatrical production of "The Breakfast Club". Something stellar about that, I got to hear our stunning vocal renderings of an 80s classic and they did a good job with the production itself. Yep yep yep.

Moving on. Today (because I had no class and other odd, odd circumstances), I went to a series of three 1-act plays. They were all well done and I enjoyed them. One of them took place with Chekhov's Cherry orchard as the setting. The beggar in this play had carried around a knife and a sickle for most of the play, and at the end he stood in front of a light and held them up so the shadow looked like the insignia on the USSR flag. While walking out at the end, I was behind some other American students and quote, "What was that thing in his hand supposed to be, the moon?"..."Yeah,I think so." AAAHHHHH!!!!! Really guys, really?

Other than that, classes are going well, MY RUNNING SHOES ARE BEING SENT OVER (I'm a little more than excited about that. I've never wanted to go running so bad in my life), I have spring break pretty much planned out (two and a half weeks split between Italy and Spain. Booyah!), and the weather for the past couple of days has been incredibly nice :) Now I'm off to learn about Japanese business culture. Ciao.
